The Uniform Law Commission (ULC) website is a good place to check if you want to see which states use a uniform law. The site has a summary, the full text of the law, and a map showing which states follow it. But, it doesn’t show how each state has changed the law or where to find it in each state’s rules. You also can’t find court cases about these laws on the ULC website—you’ll need to use Westlaw or visit a library for that. The ULC was started in 1892 to help make laws more the same in different states.

Overview

The Uniform Law Commission website is a great first stop on your research if you only need to know which states have adopted a uniform law. For every uniform law, the ULC provides a synopsis of and full text of the law, as well as a map that indicates which states have adopted it.

The ULC website is NOT a great place to go for specific statutory citations for each state’s adoption of the law (either in codes or session laws), or for clarification as to how each state during its enactment made changes to the uniform law.

Additionally, you cannot locate any citing case law through this free website. For that, you need the Uniform Laws Annotated, either in print (which we have in Carson City) or online via Westlaw (in library use only).

  • National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws (NCCUSL)
The National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws was organized in 1892 to promote uniformity in state law, on all subjects where uniformity is desirable and practicable, by voluntary action of each state government.

This resource is available from the public access computers in the law library or requires a subscription for access.
  • American Law Institute (ALI) Model Codes & Studies
The Model Penal Code and the Uniform Commercial Code are just two examples of model codes created by the ALI.

An Illustrated Example

The text of the uniform law itself is found under the Documents tab.

From here, you can access the final act with drafter's comments. Because the ULC targets state legislatures, also included is an "Enactment Kit" for use by legislatures to initiate enacting a uniform law.
