About this Guide

This guide is intended as a reference source for self-represented litigants and lawyers licensed to practice law in Nevada. This guide provides examples of Nevada legal citations, like statutes, cases, and court rules. For more citation examples, look at Nevada Appellate Court opinions and check each court’s rules for specific formats. You may want to check the Alphabetical List of Nevada Cases (1885-2019), before citing to opinions generated by artificial intelligence (AI).

For citation questions, please contact the Law Library by email at reference@nvcourts.nv.gov or by phone at 775-684-1640.

Cite Checking Tools

Citation tools can be used to validate the citations used in a legal document. CiteCheckAI is an example of a tool that legal professionals can use to verify the authenticity of citations in a document. Please note the disclaimer on CiteCheckAI's site, "CiteCheck AI is only a tool, it does not relieve lawyers from their duty of care, supervision, and competence. Ensure that you carefully review all work product before sharing it with clients and/or filing it in court."

  • CiteCheckAI
CiteCheck is free to use for the first five validation reports. You will have to provide your name and email address, but no credit card is required to try it out. After the first five reports, CiteCheck is $25 a month for up to 100 reports or $100 a month for up to 500 reports.

The Supreme Court of Nevada Law Library has other cite checking tools that are available onsite in Carson City, such as BriefCheck (Lexis+/Shepard’s), Quick Check (Westlaw Precision/KeyCite), and Bloomberg’s Brief Analyzer. View the links below to learn more about how to use the cite check tools.

  • Shepard's BriefCheck on Lexis
The Shepard’s® BriefCheck™ service automatically processes your document and validates the cited authority in it through the Lexis® service.
  • Quick Check (Westlaw/KeyCite)
Use Quick Check to check your own work, analyze your opponent’s work to identify potential weaknesses, or compare multiple filings from a matter.
  • Bloomberg's Brief Analyzer
It quickly associates legal content on Bloomberg Law's platform with the arguments and authorities in a brief, permitting the user to spot holes, review citations and quotes from authority for accuracy, find or check authority, and jump start a response.
