The American Association of Law Libraries (AALL) has guides to help people find legal information. These guides teach how to use different legal sources. The AALL Public Library Toolkit helps librarians learn about legal research. WebJunction offers free courses to teach library workers how to help with legal questions. These resources also help librarians know when to suggest talking to a lawyer.

Know When to Refer

Sometimes patrons need more than a public library can provide and sometimes patrons need legal advice from a lawyer. This brief guide on making legal referrals from the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL) may help.

  • Nevada Law Libraries
There are four law libraries in Nevada: Clark County, the Supreme Court of Nevada, UNLV Weiner-Rogers Law Library, and Washoe County Law Library.

Assessing Legal Information Needs

AALL, your legal knowledge network

When assessing legal information needs, knowing how to access primary law and secondary sources is essential. The American Association of Law Libraries (AALL) has published several brief guides that are aimed at assisting non-lawyers.

  • The AALL Public Library Toolkit - general information to help public librarians understand the process of legal research and utilize information located in and outside their libraries.
  • How to Research a Legal Problem: A Guide for Non-Lawyers
  • How to Find Legal Material if You Already Have a Citation - includes legal abbreviations.
  • Making Sure You Have The Most Current Information
  • Public Library Collection Guidelines for a Legal Research Collection - access to primary and secondary law sources, with guidelines for federal, state, and general legal materials.

WebJunction

WebJunction

WebJunction provides FREE library-specific courses and webinar recordings to all library workers and volunteers. Through the generous support of OCLC and many state library agencies across the U.S., WebJunction provides timely and relevant learning content for you to access anytime, from anywhere. Courses are webinars and related to all areas of librarianship, including legal reference.

  • Creating Pathways to Civil Legal Justice - This series of self-paced courses will strengthen public library staff’s knowledge and ability to help identify when there is a civil legal issue and how to direct library users to relevant, helpful information and services.
  • Navigating Civil Legal Issues of Natural Disasters - This training intends to fill a specific gap, which is how libraries can support the civil legal issues that community members encounter as a result of a natural disaster. These courses will equip library staff to recognize the legal issues and be prepared to provide information and resources that will guide patrons to positive outcomes.
